2. Phnom Sampov Area
Phnom Sampov is considered one of the most attractive tourist destinations in Battambang province due to its rich combination of natural, religious, and historical significance. According to the Battambang Provincial Department of Tourism, Phnom Sampov stands approximately 100 meters tall and offers access by both vehicles and motorbikes to the top. There are also stairways for visitors who prefer to walk. From a distance, the mountain resembles a traditional boat, and it features numerous caves, with 12 in total. However, only three caves are accessible to visitors. The mountain's name and its caves are tied to fascinating Khmer folklore, including the story of Preah Chao Reach Thkol and Neang Romsai Sak, which have been immortalized in various songs performed by legendary Khmer singers.
Upon reaching the summit, tourists are treated to breathtaking views of rice fields, plantations, surrounding mountains, and Battambang city. Visitors can also enjoy the cool, fresh air and stunning sunsets. One of the most captivating attractions of Phnom Sampov is the evening flight of millions of bats emerging from a cave at the base of the mountain. This spectacle usually occurs around 6:25 PM, although it can begin as early as 5:30 PM in some months. The bats fly out for approximately 50 minutes, creating a mesmerizing experience for visitors.
After exploring the ancient temples and scenic views atop Phnom Sampov during the day, tourists can stay to witness this unique bat flight at sunset. It is worth noting that Battambang province has two bat caves: one at the eastern side of Phnom Sampov and another at the northern side. These caves have become major tourist attractions, drawing both local and international visitors. On average, 250 to 300 tourists visit Phnom Sampov daily to enjoy its natural beauty and capture memorable photographs.
The bat cave’s advantageous location near the main road and its timing, coinciding with tourists’ descent from the mountain, make it convenient for visitors. Local authorities and residents have also organized seating arrangements and food and drink stalls for tourists waiting to witness the bats. Presently, many locals benefit economically from Phnom Sampov through services such as transportation, guiding, and selling food and beverages, contributing to the area's growing popularity.
